Canadian bass Alexander Savtchenko, a native of Ukraine immigrated to Canada in 1990, after completing his studies at the Kiev Conservatory. He was immediately recognized as a singer with a voice of uncommon beauty and emotional scope.In the 1992 Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition, he was the only winner representing both Canada and Ukraine. He was a Resident Artist with L’Opéra de Montréal from 1991-92 and Kiel Opera, Germany from 1999-2002. In 1997, he made his Carnegie Hall debut in Dvorak’s Te Deum.

Opera, Oratorio, Concert performances have taken him throughout North America and Europe. Notable roles include: Mephistopheles (FAUST), Basilio (IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA), Sparafucile (RIGOLETTO), Colline (LA BOHEME), Raimondo (LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR), Timur (TURANDOT), Prince Gremin (EUGENE ONEGIN), Il Commendatore (DON GIOVANNI), Ramphis (AIDA), Lindorf, Dr Coppelius, Dr. Miracle, and Dapertutto (LES CONTES d’HOFFMANN).

The 1998-99 season included the MOZART REQUIEM with the Philharmonic Society of Montreal; The King of Egypt (AIDA) with Opera Ontario Inc., and the BACH MAGNIFICAT with the Ottawa Centennial Choir.

From 1999-2002, as a resident artist with Kiel Opera, Germany (Buhnen der Landeshauptstadt Kiel), his roles included: Councillor Lindorf, Dr. Coppelius, Dr. Miracle and Dapertutto (LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN); Capelio (I CAPULETTI E I MONTECCHI); Basilio (IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA); Colline (LA BOHEME); Zacharie (LE PROPHETE); Sparafucile (RIGOLETTO); Ramphis (AIDA); Farfallo (DIE SCHWEIGSAME FRAU); and a RUSSIAN ROMANCE PROGRAM. Engagements in 2002-2003 were with Opera Ontario Inc., included the roles of Nourabad (LES PECHEURS DE PERLES); and Colline (LA BOHEME).

The 2003-04 season included Timur (TURANDOT) and Dr. Dulcamara (L’ELISIR D’AMORE) with Opera de Quebec; L’Opera de Montreal’s Gala Concert; and RACHMANINOV’S THE BELLS, with the Philharmonic Society of Montreal.

The 2004-2005 season included Tom (UN BALLO IN MASCHERA ) with Opera de Quebec; and Osmin (DIE ENTFUHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL) with Opera Ontario, and the VERDI REQUIEM with the Philharmonic Society of Montreal.

The 2007-2008 season includes Micha (THE BARTERED BRIDE), and Marchese di Calatrava (LA FORZA DEL DESTINO) with the Baltimore Opera.
